Areola Injury Update
In yesterday’s match against Manchester City, West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was substituted at half-time, with Lukasz Fabianski stepping in for the second half. With Wes Foderingham as the only other cover, concerns quickly arose. Manager Julen Lopetegui addressed the situation in his post-match interview, though he didn’t provide many details.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Julen Lopetegui confirmed that Alphonse Areola was substituted due to injury, though it’s unclear when exactly it occurred. Areola did collide with the post during the first half, but the hope is that he won’t be sidelined for long.
“He had an issue with his back in the first half, which is why we made the change,” Lopetegui explained.
It’s unclear how long Areola will be out, but the timing of the injury aligns with the international break, giving the Frenchman a chance to recover before West Ham’s next match on September 14th. The club is expected to provide an update on his condition soon.
