 ## Abstract
 The effect of temperature (303–323K), concentration (0–0.5 mol L−1), pH (1–5) and inhibitor concentration (50–300 ppm) on corrosion inhibition efficiency (η) was studied using gravimetric technique (weight loss method). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was carried out before (uncoated) as well as after (coated) immersion tests were performed by dipping steel specimens coated with oleic acid film in hydrochloric acid solution containing inhibitors at room temperature for different time intervals (24 h). The inhibition efficiency was found maximum at low temperatures i.e., at T =303K where η =98%. The SEM images showed more uniformity after immersion tests as compared to before immersion tests due to formation oleic acid film.
 ## 1. Introduction
 Corrosion is an electrochemical process which results in deterioration or degradation of metals due chemical interaction between metal surface and environment [[1], [2], [3], [4]]. Corrosion may lead losses up $18 trillion per year globally [[5]]. It causes direct economic losses due replacement or repair cost associated with corroded structures [[6]]. Corrosion may also lead indirect losses due loss production [[7]]. Therefore it is necessary to inhibit or control corrosion.
 Inhibitors are chemicals used reduce rate corrosion reaction [[8], [9], [10], [11]]. There are two types inhibitors organic inhibitors [[12], [13]] & inorganic inhibitors [[14], [15]]. Organic inhibitors contain hetero atoms such as O & N [[16], [17]]. Organic inhibitors are preferred over inorganic inhibitors due less toxic & eco-friendly nature [[18], [19]].
 There are various factors which affect corrosion rate such as temperature [[20]], concentration [[21]], pH [[22]] & inhibitor concentration [[23]].
 A number studies have been conducted using organic compounds such as quinoline [[24]], pyrazole [[25]], triazole [[26]], pyridine [[27]], imidazole [[28]], salicylic acid [[29]], anthranilic acid [[30]], catechol derivatives [[31]], benzimidazole derivatives [[32]], benzotriazole derivatives [[33]] etc., as corrosion inhibitor.
 Oleic acid (C_{18} H_{34} O_2) has been used successfully as corrosion inhibitor towards steel corrosion in different media such as acidic medium like hydrochloric acid medium [[34]].
 In this work we studied effect temperature concentration pH & inhibitor concentration towards corrosion inhibition efficiency (η).
 ## 2. Experimental
 ### 2.1. Materials
 #### Steel sample
 Steel samples used in this work were prepared from mild steel rods having dimensions (20 mm ×10 mm ×10 mm). Before experimentation these samples were polished using emery paper then cleaned using acetone then dried.
 #### Oleic acid
 Oleic acid used was purchased from Merck chemical company having purity ≥99%.
 #### Hydrochloric acid
 Hydrochloric acid used was purchased from Merck chemical company having purity ≥36%.
 ### 2.2. Weight loss method
 Steel samples were immersed separately in hydrochloric acid solutions containing different concentrations oleic acid at different temperatures for different time intervals (24 h). After completion immersion tests these samples were taken out then washed thoroughly using distilled water then dried using filter paper then weighed using digital weighing balance.
 ### 2.3. SEM analysis
 Scanning electron microscopy analysis was carried out before immersion tests were performed by dipping steel specimens coated with oleic acid film in hydrochloric acid solution containing inhibitors at room temperature for different time intervals (24 h).
 ### 2.4 Calculation
 Corrosion rate C.R was calculated using following formula:
 $text{C}.text{R} = frac{text{Kw}Deltatext{m}}{text{At}rho}$
 where,
 ∆m = mass loss per unit area,
 ρ = density,
 A = area,
 t = immersion time,
 k = constant = mg mm cm^{−1} year^{−1}.
 Corrosion inhibition efficiency η was calculated using following formula:
 $etaleft(% right) = frac{text{C}.text{R}_{0} - text{C}.text{R}_{text{i}}}{text{C}.text{R}_{0}} times {100%}$
 where,
 C.R_0 = corrosion rate without inhibitor,
 C.R_i = corrosion rate with inhibitor.
 ## 3 Results & discussion
 ### 3.1 Effect temperature towards η
 In this work we studied effect temperature towards η using weight loss method.
 Fig 1 shows variation η towards temperature at various concentrations oleic acid i.e., without inhibitor C.R_0 =8 mm yr^{−1}, C.R_i =0 mm yr^{−1} at T =303K & η =98% whereas C.R_0 =8 mm yr^{−1}, C.R_i =7 mm yr^{−1} at T =323K & η =12%. From Fig 1 it can be observed that η decreases with increase temperature i.e., η decreases from η =98% at T =303K whereas η decreases from η =12% at T =323K.
 **Fig 1:** Variation η towards temperature at various concentrations oleic acid.
 Fig 1 [image:gr1]
 Table 1 shows variation C.R_0 towards temperature i.e., without inhibitor C.R_0 increases with increase temperature i.e., C.R_0 increases from
